Colorado Birding Trail

The Colorado Birding Trail is a cooperation between over a dozen organizations and individuals. The initiative seeks to “promote responsible outdoor recreation” according to their website, and helps birders, hikers, and any nature lover to enjoy the outdoors while leaving as little of a human imprint as possible. There are 54 trails around the entire state, ranging from alpine to plains environments, showcasing all manner of native flora and fauna.

The trails are split into 3 different zones: Eastern Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Western Colorado. In each of these zones, you’ll find groupings of trails that have been assigned to drivable routes. For example, if you were to do the Castlewood Trail in the Eastern Plains zone, you’ll see there are 9 trailheads all within the same general area.

You can also pick up guidebooks at a number of locations across the state, like the Colorado Parks and Wildlife offices or borrow them from our lending library. You can even download printable guides on their website!
